Foetus and adult material were compared as subjects for studies of protein variation. Adult material is preferable in most cases. Around 40 loci were investigated in 28 Larus argentatus, 26 L. fuscus and 12 L. marinus preparations. Six loci varied in L. fuscus, four in L. argentatus and two in L. marinus. The degree of genetic variation seems to be low in the gulls investigated, less than 15 % of the loci being polymorphic. There is identity or parallel variation for all loci investigated within the three species, making it impossible to distinguish between individuals from different species. This is in agreement with other genetic methods previously used to distinguish Larus species.
