The investigations which follow were begun in 1960 in Cape Town, South Africa, to determine the extent to which the ordinary urban dweller is exposed by occupation or environment to the inhalation of asbestos. The initial grounds for this undertaking were the finding of a limited asbestosis confined to the lung bases in cases of malignant mesothelioma of pleura and peritoneum, in subjects with no known history of occupational or other exposure to asbestos,' and the recognition of the occasional and unexplained asbestos body in routine histological sections of lungs at autopsy.
