Masten completed her Ph.D. in 1982 in Clinical Psychology at the University of Minnesota, specializing in developmental psychopathology. She is currently Director of the Institute of Child Development and Distinguished McKnight University Professor at the University of Minnesota, and President-Elect of Division 7 (Developmental) of the American Psychological Association. Her research has focused on understanding risk and resilience in development.
