The influence of the flame retardant chemical tris(2,3‐dibromopropyl) phosphate, and the related chemical species, tripropyl phosphate and 2,3‐dibromopropanol, on the products of pyrolysis of poly(ethylene terephthalate), has been examined as a function of chemical concentration. The species containing phosphourus only and bromine only had little effect on the composition and concentration of the pyrolysis products. The tris(2,3‐dibromopropyl) phosphate had a significant effect upon the pyrolysis product distribution, and is capable of influencing the decomposition reactions of poly(ethylene terephthalate).
