Despite historical challenges in development, a new era of renin inhibitors is emerging.
Although research has shown that blocking theinitial step in the cascade has the potential foradditional improvements in therapy, thedevelopment of renin inhibitors has been besetwith problems. The cost of synthesis, low andvariable bioavailability, the lack of appropriateanimal models and the success of the ARB classhave all impacted development. Efforts toconquer these problems, however, are provingsuccessful and a new era in the development ofrenin inhibitors has emerged. I provide here asynopsis of my recently published paper (co-authored with Naomi Fisher) that looks at theseissues in detail.
