Single crystals of tin oxide (SnO 2 ) have been grown by a vapour-phase transport method and subsequently doped with terbium ions. The cathodoluminescence of these crystals has been measured at room temperature (300 K). The spectra comprise the intrinsic emission band of the host lattice and bands due to the presence of the terbium ion; the emission bands due to the terbium ion are reported for the first time. The terbium is incorporated in the host lattice as Tb 3+ .
