The effect of surface contamination on the morphology and orientation of poly‐ L ‐alanine on a glass‐ceramic and the (10 1 0) and (10 1 1) crystal faces of L ‐quart is dealt with both microscopically and graphically. “Cleaning” with an r. f. plasma cleaner and contamination with pure nitrogen results in a change in the number of active sites with a corresponding change in the relative orientation of the polymer and the strength of bonding.
