U.S. workers' affective responses to turnover were examined. Employees from two organizations were asked about their reactions to the news that a co-worker had quit. The results indicated that the stayers' response to turnover was based on a comparison of their situation with that of their former colleague. The employees' affective responses to their co-workers' departure were influenced by whether their co-worker left for reasons that reflected negatively on the job or for reasons that were unrelated to the job.
