Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a globally prevalent respiratory virus responsible for significant morbidity, particularly among children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Recent outbreaks in Bangladesh, a densely populated South Asian country with a high burden of respiratory illnesses, have drawn attention to the virus’s emergence in the region. The paper explores the virology, pathogenesis, and epidemiological trends of hMPV globally, with a focus on South Asia and Bangladesh. The report highlights the seasonal dynamics of outbreaks, regional variations in incidence, and diagnostic challenges. In Bangladesh, the first hMPV case of 2025 marked a critical point in understanding its public health impact, particularly following the country’s first hMPV-related fatality. Current treatment options remain supportive, with no vaccine available, underscoring the urgent need for improved prevention and control strategies. Given the state of knowledge and information on human pneumonia virus (hMPV), this study has limitations, especially when considering Bangladesh and South Asia. The study is primarily hindered by the scarcity of thorough, long-term epidemiological data that particularly tracks hMPV in Bangladesh. This paper emphasizes the necessity of enhanced surveillance, robust public health infrastructure, and regional cooperation to mitigate the virus's impact.
