Data are presented from a study designed to test the hypothesis that experienced clinicians associate a decreased ability to enact adaptive behaviors with both the exacerbation and remission states of psychiatric illnesses. Results indicate that experienced clinicians associate significant functional impairments with both states: clinicians' characterizations of impairment profiles characterizing remission vs. normal states are distinct. Results are discussed from an evolutionary biological perspective.
