We have investigated the azimuthal dependence of angle-resolved photoemission cross section for emission from surface atoms and molecules. Using group theory, we have determined the azimuthal dependence for emission normal to the surface from adsorbate-induced states of atoms and molecules situated at different symmetry locations.
