A new probe for simultaneous measurement of cross‐sectional area and pressure in the female urethra has been devised based on the field‐gradient principle and microtip transducer technique. The system permits measurement during fast inductions of well‐defined cross‐sectional areas in segments of the urethra (experimental stress episodes), contraction of the pelvic floor, and coughing. The measurements make possible a description of the static and dynamic mechanical properties of the female urethra in terms of compliance or elastance, uninstrumented closure pressure, and hysteresis. Furthermore, urethral closure function can be evaluated in terms of work or power created by the urethral closure apparatus during contraction of the pelvic floor and during coughing.
