Magnetic domains in CrBr 3 and CrI 3 were investigated down to 3 °K in an electron microscope in the Fresnel and Foucault mode of Lorentz microscopy, and by Fraunhofer diffraction. The experimental domain width was found in agreement with the theoretical value calculated by crystal and magnetic energy considerations. In all modes of Lorentz microscopy the electron optical contrast of the ferromagnetic domains in films with low magnetization and small wall width as occur in CrBr 3 and CrI 3 is found to deviate markedly from the predictions of the geometric optical theory but is satisfactorily understood by wave optics.
