Medical management with anticoagulation and supportive care was effective for a case of pacing wire-induced subclavian vein thrombosis.
Medical management may be feasible for pacing wire-induced subclavian vein thrombosis; hypothesis-generating and leaves open need for prospective data.
A case of subclavian vein thrombosis documented by angiography was treated with heparinization, elevation, and elastic support of the involved extremity to obtain fixation of the thrombus and allow collateralization to occur. Oral anticoagulation was continued for six weeks. No symptoms of recurrence have been seen after one year of follow-up. Surgical intervention is rarely indicated since the recurrence rate is unacceptable.
