This paper investigates the application of nonlinear programming in three‐phase induction motor design. Appropriate design variables are chosen according to the stator and the rotor structures of the motor; these variables are used to form the objective function representing the volume of the motor and the constraints representing some designated electrical characteristics. The volume obtained by using nonlinear programming computational algorithms is smaller than the one designed by the conventional method, with all the electrical characteristics satisfying the National Standards. Computer simulations of the dynamic responses of the induction motor also show the feasibility and accuracy of applying nonlinear programming in induction motor design.
