Because of the increasing relative importance of nonpoint sources of pollution generated by overflows from combined sewer systems, real-time control of these sewer networks is of increasing interest in the overall pollution control management program. After reviewing the various levels of control applicable to combined sewer systems, the paper describes a linear programming model designed to minimize the impacts on the receiving waters. The model handles time and spatial sensitivity of the receiving waters as well as off-line storage facilities. An example illustrates the sensitivity of the model to various input parameter variations.
