It is shown that the maximum likelihood estimators (m.l.e.’s) α and β of the location and scale parameters α and β have the property that β / β, ( α - α ) / β and ( α - α ) / β are pivotal functions with distributions independent of both parameters. Similar results are seen to hold for other types of distributions by making suitable transformations.
