The problem treated is that of determining the geometric configuration and constitutive parameters of an object from a knowledge of the low‐frequency scattered far field produced by an incident plane wave. This problem is recast as a constrained optimization problem for a functional defined in terms of the polarizability tensor elements associated with the object. In particular, a method is described for finding the dimensions and orientation of that ellipsoid, the scattering properties of which best approximate the measured far field.
