The theoretical vibration spectra of cyclanes and cyclanones are discussed in terms of approximate group vibrations and in relation to several conformations of symmetry groups C 2v , C 2h and the subgroups thereof. The theoretical spectra for these ring molecules are compared with those of linear chain alkanes. The results of this investigation will be applied in subsequent papers with the observed spectra.
