The assessment of student learning and its corollary, teaching effectiveness are longstanding problems in higher education. This article describes some practical methods for designing courses and measuring student growth. To avoid student frustration, the author advises that from the start we should be clear with ourselves and with students on what the objectives of the course are. Techniques such as matrix sampling and pre-post testing can assist faculty in guiding student nurses to an acceptable level of competence.
