Signal gain variations in distributed erbium doped fibres of length 49, 80 and 92 km are measured using an optical time domain reflectometer. With these measurements as reference, gain variations at large signal power levels are predicted. Numerical calculations show that distributed amplification leads to improved soliton stability when increasing the bit rate.
