The reentrant behaviour (Sm C–Sm C * –Sm C–Sm C * ) observed experimentally in an electric field near the chiral smectic C to smectic A phase transition point is investigated. That curious phenomenon is attributed to the nonlinear excitation of the turn of the director field in the smectic C phase. Similar behaviour near the Lifshitz point in the magnetic field versus temperature plane is also explained by that excitation.
