Degradations to isolate the carbon atoms at positions 4,5, and 6 of the alkaloid ricinine from Ricinus communis L. are described. Tracer experiments with glycerol-1- 14 C and glycerol-2- 14 C suggest that glycerol or a closely related metabolic compound is a biosynthetic precursor of these carbon atoms.
