Thermolysis of fifteen ring-substituted arylammonium salts of NTO (RSA NTOates, C-NO2 explosive) have been studied by dynamic and isothermal TG; DTA and explosion delay measurements. Kinetics of their thermolysis was evaluatedusing TG and explosion delay data. Some of the RSA NTOates have been found to liberate amine by N-H bond heterolysis prior to explosion whereas in other cases, amine part is not liberated. However formation of NO2 seems plausible to cause explosion. The oxidation-reduction reactions near the surface of thermolysing materials (RSA NTOates) may be responsible for the decomposition of these salts prior to explosion.
