On the basis of theoretical and experimental results, a simple mechanical framework is developed in which the propagation of the isolated bolus can be understood. It is shown that the pressure in the bolus is determined primarily by the pressure needed to separate the walls of the collapsed ureter, and that the observed variations in the velocity of the leading edge can be accounted for by nonuniformity of the ureteric cross section.
