"Professor: a feminine Profession? Contributions to a socio-historical Approach'! The author analyses the evolution of secondary school teaching by women throughout the 20th century. She tries to show what may be meant by the "féminisation" of teaching at various periods and to bring out the institutional and - social stakes involved in this process. At the same time, she questions to what extent the exercise of a qualified profes- - sion and the single status of a majority, of teachers for half a century, have opened up to women territories perceivedas "masculine". In a similar vein, the article postulates that possibilities for promotion came into being for married teachers with children after 1965 and that, under certain conditions, the teaching profession eludes the traditional definition of a "woman's profession".
