SummaryThe present study was designed to make clear the relationship between the survival time of animals and the transit time of epithelial cells in the acute intestinal radiation death of germ-free and conventional rodents. The survival times of those animals which died with typical gastrointestinal symptoms after exposure to large doses of X-rays were recorded. The transit times of intestinal epithelial cells, obtained by means of 3H-thymidine autoradiography, were measured. A high correlation (coefficient 0·98) was found between the survival times and the transit times.
