Transduction of Salmonella typhimurium LT-2 recipients by temperate or virulent strains of phage PLT-22 was performed, and the transducted colonies were counted after 2 days of incubation at 37 deg C. The transduction frequencies obtained with the virulent mutant phages were markedly dependent on ultraviolet dosage. The maximal transduction frequency was obtained when tide plaque titer was reduced to 10/sup/-7/ with an ultraviolet dosage of 6000 ergs/mm/sup/ 2/. Transduction could not be demonstrated with ultraviolet irradiated virulent phages unrelated to known transducing phage. (P.C.H.)
