Does early administration of pravastatin reduce inflammatory markers in patients with acute myocardial infarction?

Population

46 randomized patients with acute myocardial infarction (91% ST-elevation myocardial infarction in the analyzed cohort of 35 patients), admitted to the coronary care unit. Mean time from onset of chest pain to admission was 10.4 hours.

Intervention

Pravastatin 40 mg oral once daily added to routine treatment (nitrates, beta-blockers, calcium antagonists, aspirin, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, and low-molecular-weight heparin) for 72 hours.

Comparator

Conventional routine treatment (nitrates, beta-blockers, calcium antagonists, aspirin, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, and low-molecular-weight heparin) without cholesterol-lowering drugs for 72 hours.

Outcome

Changes in serum soluble CD40L (sCD40L), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and C-reactive protein (CRP) at 72 hours.surrogate

Early short-term pravastatin therapy in acute myocardial infarction rapidly reduces inflammatory markers independent of lipid-lowering effects, suggesting early pleiotropic benefits.
