The B.B.C.'s attempt to present an adaptation of Wuthering Heights by television in December last must, I fear, be regarded as a gallant failure. Considered simply as an experimental play, the production (by Rudolph Carter) had its dramatic moments, and was distinguished by some fine acting, particularly on the part of Miss Yvonne Mitchell who played the difficult role of Cathy; but the play itself was but a pale shadow of the famous novel. Whether any other cast could have done better is beside the point: the real question is whether television, at its present stage of development, is capable of transmitting such a complex story as Wuthering Heights to the satisfaction of those who are familiar with Emily Brontë's masterpiece, and with its moorland background.
