The predominance of females in the aged population cohort and aspirations of younger women to fuller participation in the labor force suggest an alternate family form that could make it possible to satisfy the needs of both groups. The possibilities of an affiliative kin structure are examined using a model to show that there is a basis for mutually profitable exchange. The two major areas of exchange revolve around the socialization process and role actualization. It is concluded that an affiliated family might afford an opportunity to integrate older women into society by providing occupational and/or familial roles for them while permiting younger women to develop careers at a more natural time of life.
