Empirical clinical practice has become an important approach to social work practice. In this article, the metatheoretical and methodological justification for empirical clinical practice is analyzed. Based on this analysis, it is concluded that the argument for empirical clinical practice as the dominant approach to social work practice is weak and that alternative approaches should be encouraged.
