Summary Of 11 species of Leptospira, 5 produce hemolysin for sheep red blood cells. L. pomona produces the greatest amount of hemolysin; smaller amounts are produced by L. autumnalis, L. australis, L. canicola, and L. grippotyphosa. Hemolysin of L. pomona exhibits strong activity against sheep erythrocytes, slight activity on human and rabbit erythrocytes, and little or no activity on guinea pig erythrocytes. The hemolysin is heat labile but is not altered by repeated freezing and thawing. Hemolysin is neutralized by antiserum from immunized rabbits.
