Numerical results for the spin polarisation S P and the scattering asymmetry S A are presented for the elastic and inelastic scattering of electrons from Hg and Tl atoms. The interpretation in terms of the so-called 'fine-structure effect' indicates that spin flips by exchange may represent an important polarisation mechanism, in addition to the conventional Mott scattering process.
