Summary A new kind of non-linear predictor is introduced, called a progressive corrector. The predictor is closely related to the exponentially weighted moving average, which can be regarded as a degenerate case of a progressive corrector. An attempt is made to approximate the mean square error of prediction. Mean square error is criticized as a criterion for the optimality of a predictor which is being used as part of an inventory control system.
