The supine position increased resting DLCO significantly more in endurance-trained individuals compared with untrained individuals, but did not increase diffusing capacity during exercise.
Why the study?
Does the supine position affect pulmonary diffusing capacity at rest and during exercise differently in endurance-trained versus untrained individuals?

The supine position increases resting pulmonary diffusing capacity more in endurance-trained individuals, suggesting physiological adaptations and a potential morphological limit in the pulmonary microvasculature.
We demonstrate that the supine position increases resting DLCO significantly more in endurance-trained individuals as compared with untrained individuals. Furthermore, the supine position increases pulmonary capillary blood volume, but not diffusing capacity during exercise. Lastly, there was an apparent plateau in DLCO and V C in the Trained group suggesting the pulmonary microvasculature may reach a morphological limit.

Brotto et al. (2024) conducted an observational in Endurance-trained and untrained individuals. Supine position vs. Untrained individuals / Upright position was evaluated on Pulmonary diffusing capacity (DLCO) and pulmonary capillary blood volume. The supine position increased resting DLCO significantly more in endurance-trained individuals compared with untrained individuals, but did not increase diffusing capacity during exercise.
