This report summarizes the results from an electrochemical study of the oxygen evolution process on a platinum electrode in a LiCl/Li 2 O electrolyte at 650°C. Cyclic voltammetry was performed at Li 2 O concentrations of 0.48 wt%, 0.75 wt%, and 1 wt%. The cyclic voltammograms indicated that the oxygen evolution process was a highly irreversible reaction in this system. The reaction mechanism appeared to involve a two-step electron transfer when the Li 2 O concentration was at 0.48 wt% and transitioned to a one step electron transfer when the Li 2 O concentration was increased to 0.75 wt% and 1.0 wt%. The two-step electron transfer suggests that oxygen anions, other than O 2− , may exist in the electrolyte.
