Resonance Raman spectra, obtained with 676.4 and 752.5 nm excitation, are reported for the carotenoid molecule astaxanthin in situ in the shell of a lobster. The spectra show unusual frequency shifts and absolute intensity behaviour in the case of 676.4 and 752.5 nm excitation, respectively, and support the hypothesis that the shell contains astaxanthin bearing pigments which have not yet been isolated and characterized.
