Ozone was used to study the inactivation of the DNA bacteriophage, T4. Ozone attacks the protein capsid, liberating the nucleic acid and inactivates the DNA. The DNA inactivation rate was about the same rate as the intact phage. The general ozone inactivation mechanism for RNA or DNA viruses is an initial attack on the capsid with apparent concurrent inactivation of the nucleic acid. The liberated nucleic acid is then further attacked by ozone.
