The demographic transition that occurred in the Netherlands between 1850 and 1960 is examined with particular reference to the relationship between changes in demographic indicators in urban areas and their surrounding rural areas. Consideration is given not only to general fertility but to mortality marital and extramarital fertility and marriage and marital dissolution. The author also attempts to identify regionally specific factors that affect demographic behavior. (ANNOTATION)
