The prophylaxis of postirradiation vaginitis with topical estrogen cream was studied immediately upon completion of therapy in a controlled double-blind investigation of 93 patients with cervical carcinoma. Estrogen-treated subjects, in comparison with controls, had statistically significantly less dyspareunia, alterations in vaginal epithelium, and narrowing of vaginal caliber. Coitus, independent of estrogen treatment, was associated with a more nearly normal vaginal caliber, but a cause-and-effect relationship was not clear from the present data. It is concluded that the postirradiation use of estrogen could be expected to lower the incidence of postirradiation vaginal complications.
