Hairs were removed from upper surfaces of leaves of Gynura aurantiaca (velvet plant) with an electric razor. Pubescence on young leaves significantly increased total and diffuse reflectance in the 750-1,000 μ region, but it decreased total and diffuse reflectance in the 1,000-2,500 μ region. Hairiness had little effect on the reflectance of visible light within 500-750 μ. Theoretically, hairs increased scattering of incident radiation and thereby increased total reflectance in the near-infrared region between 750 and 1,000 μ. Further research is needed to explain the reduced reflectance caused by hairiness in the 1,000-2,500 μ region.
