The accurate diagnosis of amblyopia at an early age is extremely important to both the orthoptist and the ophthalmologist, as well as to the patient. The several preliterate tests routinely used to assess visual acuity include: Allen Picture Chart, HOTV/STYCAR, Snellen Pictures and Linear “E” Game. In our report, we evaluate these tests as assessors of amblyopia on several criteria: The size of the individual tar-gets, the space between the test objects and the space between the separate lines. We conclude that the Snellen Pictures, HOTV/STYCAR, and the Linear “E” tests are apporiximately equivalent discriminators, whereas the Allen test is not a reliable test instrument.
