Based on opto-electronic principles, an electronic stiffness meter has been designed using Peirce's technique. This study shows that the instrument effectively transfers the method of using the overhanging length to the measurement of stiffness of fabrics electronically. Based on cantilever bending, this correlates very well and has the same accuracy as the Shirley stiffness meter, which works on the same principle. This method may be superior, however, since the measurement is objective and, being based on electronics, could easily be automated.
