Gender socialization is overlooked as a primary factor in the development of alcoholism, addiction, and other compulsive behaviors among women. This paper reviews the literature regarding women and alcoholism/addiction, suggesting a feminist critique. The paper also offers some alternative interpretations of gender-role conflict and gender socialization as critical factors in the development of addiction among women. Treatment issues are discussed.
