This article describes the process of restructuring a women's program within a large, coed acute care speciality hospital. Both clinical and administrative issues are addressed as the process of change at the institutional, staff and program component level is discussed. A review of some of the special needs of chemically dependent women is provided. Specifically discussed are issues related to low self-esteem. Psvchosocial stressors, dependency and role conflict. Responsive programming designed to address the special issues of chemically dependent women are described. The discussion includes a report on the effect of the program's restructuring upon the retention of women in treatment.
