High purity nickel prepared by Fink and Rohrman when melted in an alundum crucible in a molybdenum resistance furnace was found to contain as much as 0.1 per cent molybdenum. By surrounding the crucible with a gas tight porcelain tube, nickel, free from molybdenum, was obtained. The introduction of the porcelain tube and the use of a different cement for the crucible resulted in the contamination of the nickel with silicon.
