Tourism, an important sector of the Spanish economy, has changed its nature over the last 20 years. Although the number of tourists has ceased to grow in recent years, there is a continuing pressure on land by expansion of some tourist phenomena such as second homes and camp sites, and the local governments are instigating more growth through new infrastructure, schools and sports facilities. Commercial interests are against any restriction on new development, as demonstrated in their opposition to town plans. The Costa Brava exemplifies these tendencies, and has no regional controls on development despite belonging to the autonomous region of Catalonia.
