Nine compounds were evaluated for juvenile hormone activity against insecticide resistant and susceptible strains of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), and a resistant strain of the confused flour beetle, T. confusum Jacquelin duVal. The candidate compounds were incorporated into the diet of the developing insects at a concentration of 5 ppm. The most effective compounds inhibiting development in T. castaneum were an aromatic terpenoid ether and a 14-carbon chain alkyl terpenoid ketone; development of T. confusum was not inhibited by any of the compounds. A high degree of morphological deformity in the developing adults was induced in both species by a 15-carbon chain alkyl terpenoid ketone.
