The rate law for the reaction of glycine with N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) has been determined to be −d(NEM)/dt = k(NEM)(glycine)/a H +, which is consistent with a rate-controlling reaction of an unprotonated amino group with the N-ethylmaleimide. The rate constant, k, has the value 3.7 × 10 −11 min −1 at 25°.
